I can spin this till I’m blue in the face, but it is tough to visualize nothingness unless we have some context to work with. What’s more, 99.9999999% of our own body is empty space! What we think of as solid matter is just very tiny oscillations of waves in an otherwise empty nothingness. Everything else is just a huge void, what Lao Tzu called nothingness. In other words, the matter that makes up our entire universe takes up only 4.9% of the universe. Let’s start the show with an important axiom of quantum physics the fact that the universe is 95.1% empty. In fact, we even seek out scientific evidence of nothingness.īut what does topology have to do with nothingness? And what does nothingness have to do with the Tao? To answer this question, we have to poke a little bit into quantum physics, so please bear up with me for a tiny bit. In truth, I could leave this entire post blank, and it would be adequate to explain this word, but I am human, and you are human, and we humans like to discuss and pontificate about all things that have to do with nothing. Today, I’m going to talk about the single word extracted from chapter 14 of the Tao Te Ching, nothingness. I’ve done this in the past with only the two words Tao Axiom, as well as the section that starts with ‘Wield the Tao of the ancients’. This entire chapter is very dense with information, and my usual MO is to separate it into sections and talk about this subject within the lines and snippets. Thus it is called the form of the formless These three cannot be completely unraveled Since Taoism has a lot to say about NOTHING, I’ll start with Chapter 14 of the Tao Te Ching, translated by Derek Lin Tao Te Ching: Chapter 14 In fact, I have a lot to say about nothing.
